A SWARM of honeybees functions as a single collective brain when choosing a new home, say biologists in the US. Scouting bees do a dance to indicate the location and quality of prospective sites for new nests. Gradually, a single dance prevails and the swarm heads off to its new home. By using video techniques, Thomas Seeley and Susannah Buhrman of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have now discovered that individual bees rarely switch from one dance to another.
